Larry Ellison
Lawrence J. Ellison was born in the Bronx, New York. At nine months, he contracted pneumonia, and his unmarried 19-year-old mother gave him to her aunt and uncle in Chicago to raise. Lawrence was raised in a two-bedroom apartment on the city's South Side. Until he was twelve years old he did not know that he was adopted. His adoptive father had lost his real estate business in the Great Depression and made a modest living as an auditor for the public housing authority. As a boy, Larry Ellison showed an independent, rebellious streak and often clashed with his adoptive father. From an early age, he showed a strong aptitude for math and science, and was named science student of the year at the University of Illinois.
During the final exams in his second year, Larry Ellison's adoptive mother died, and he dropped out of school. He enrolled at the University of Chicago the following fall, but dropped out again after the first semester. His adoptive father was now convinced that Larry would never make anything of himself, but the seemingly aimless young man had already learned the rudiments of computer programming in Chicago. He took this skill with him to Berkeley, California, arriving with just enough money for fast food and a few tanks of gas. For the next eight years, Ellison bounced from job to job, working as a technician for Fireman's Fund and Wells Fargo bank. As a programmer at Amdahl Corporation, he participated in building the first IBM-compatible mainframe system.
In 1977, Ellison and two of his Amdahl colleagues, Robert Miner and Ed Oates, founded their own company, Software Development Labs. From the beginning, Ellison served as Chief Executive Officer. Ellison had come across a paper called "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks" by Edgar F. ("Ted") Codd, describing a concept Codd had developed at IBM. Codd's employers saw no commercial potential in the concept of a Structured Query Language (SQL), but Larry Ellison did.
Ellison and his partners won a two-year contract to build a relational database management system (RDBMS) for the CIA. The project's code name: Oracle. They finished the project a year ahead of schedule and used the extra time to develop their system for commercial applications. They named their commercial RDBMS Oracle as well. In 1980, Ellison's company had only eight employees, and revenues were less than $1 million, but the following year, IBM itself adopted Oracle for its mainframe systems, and Oracle's sales doubled every year for the next seven years,. The million dollar company was becoming a billion dollar company. Ellison renamed the company Oracle Corporation, for its best-selling product.
Oracle went public in 1986, raising $31.5 million with its initial public offering, but the firm's zealous young staff habitually overstated revenues, and in 1990 the company posted its first losses. Oracle's market capitalization fell by 80 percent and the company appeared to be on the verge of bankruptcy. Accepting the need for drastic change, he replaced much of the original senior staff with more experienced managers. For the first time, he delegated the management side of the business to professionals, and channeled his own energies into product development. A new version of the database program Oracle 7, released in 1992, swept the field and made Oracle the industry leader in database management software. In only two years the company's stock had regained much of its previous value.
Even as Oracle's fortunes rose again, Ellison suffered a series of personal mishaps. Long an enthusiast of strenuous outdoor activities, Ellison suffered serious injuries while body surfing and mountain biking. He recovered from major surgery, and continued to race his 78-foot yacht, Sayonara, and to practice aerobatics in a succession of private jets, including decommissioned fighter planes. In 1998, Ellison and Sayonara won the Sydney to Hobart race, overcoming near-hurricane winds that sank five other boats, drowning six participants. Ellison is a principal supporter of the BMW Oracle Racing team, which has been a significant force in America's Cup competition. His yacht, Rising Sun, over 450 feet long, is one of the largest privately owned vessels in the world.
Oracle's fortunes continued to rise throughout the 1990s. America's banks, airlines, automobile companies and retail giants all came to depend on Oracle's database programs. Under Ellison's leadership, Oracle became a pioneer in providing business applications over the Internet. Oracle benefited hugely from the growth of electronic commerce; its net profits increased by 76 percent in a single quarter of the year 2000. As the stocks of other high tech companies fluctuated wildly, Oracle held its value, and its largest shareholder, founder and CEO Larry Ellison, came close to a long-cherished goal, surpassing Microsoft's Bill Gates to become the richest man in the world.
Beginning in 2004, Ellison set out to increase Oracle's market share through a series of strategic acquisitions. Oracle spent more than $25 billion in only three years to buy a flock of companies and large and small, makers of software for managing data, identity, retail inventory and logistics. The first major acquisition was PeopleSoft, purchased at the end of 2004 for $10.3 billion. No sooner was the ink dry on the PeopleSoft deal than Ellison trumped rival SAP to acquire retail software developer Retek. Within the following year, Oracle also acquired competitor Siebel Systems. Ellison capped this buying spree with the acquisition of business intelligence software provider Hyperion Solutions in 2007. Two years later, in the depths of a global recession, Ellison once again acted boldly, acquiring computer hardware and software manufacturer Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion. Oracle is now the world's largest business software company, supplying all 100 of of the Fortune Global 100.
Today, Lawrence Ellison has his principal home in Woodside, California. He served as President of Oracle from 1978 to 1996, and undertook two stints as Chairman of the Board, from 1990 to 1992, and again from 1995 to 2004. Since its founding, he has been Oracle's only Chief Executive Officer.
After many years of pursuing a victory in the America's Cup yacht race, Ellison triumphed at last in 2010. Ellison joined the crew of the BMW Oracle for the second leg of the two-day competition, when the giant trimaran, with its revolutionary 223-foot wing sail, ended the race five minutes and 25 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Ellison's victory brings the 159-year-old America's Cup, the oldest trophy in international sports, back to the United States for the first time in 15 years.

Michael Dell Biography (Michael SauMichael Dell is the founder of the computer company Dell, Inc. He created one of the most profitable computer companies in the world with annual sales of up to $50 billion American dollars. Dell has also become one of the wealthiest people in the world with a 4th place listing on the Forbes rich Americans list in 2005 with an estimated worth of $18 billion.Michael Saul Dell was born on the 23rd of February, 1965 in Houston to an orthodontist father and a mother that worked as a money manager. Dell was interested in computers from a very young age and was already pulling them apart at the age of 15. He attended the University of Texas with hopes of becoming a doctor but abandoned studies to start his own business at just 19 years of age. With just one thousand dollars in his pocket Dell started "PC's Limited" in 1984. From his university dorm room Dell started building and selling personal computers from stock computer parts. The idea that set the young entrepreneur apart from others was to sell directly to the customer, rather than going through a third party to sell his products.PC's Limited allowed the customer to customize their computer before it was custom built to their specifications. The prices could also be kept much lower than PC's Limited's competition as they had no stores to maintain or middlemen to pay commissions to. All computers were sold direct to the customer with the use of order forms, phone orders, and now Internet orders. In 1988 PC's Limited had a name change to "Dell Computer Corporation" and had an initial public offering (IPO) that valued the company at roughly $80 million. By 1992 Dell Computer Corporation was listed on the Fortune 500 list of the five hundred largest companies in the world, making Michael Dell the youngest ever CEO to head a Fortune 500 company. The company continued to grow and expand dramatically year after year, eventually selling more computers in the United States of America than any other PC company (including Compaq)."Dell Computer Corporation" became "Dell Inc." as they moved into other areas of business. Dell Inc. now has an expanding product range that includes home entertainment systems and personal devices.Michael has published his partly autobiographical book "Direct From Dell: Strategies That Revolutionized an Industry". The book is written in an entertaining, fast paced style that explains how Dell turned his $1000 company into a mega-corporation worth more than $100 billion.Dell stepped down from his role as CEO at Dell Inc. in 2004 but remains the Chairman of the Board.Michael Dell uses some of his great wealth for philanthropic activities and has started the "Michael and Susan Dell Foundation" with his wife Susan. The organization is committed to improving the lives of children in the United States of America and internationally. A letter from Susan and Michael Dell states that the role of the foundation is to focus on "..quality education and good health for children. We recognize that these issues are directly connected. If children have the tools they need to take care of their bodies and minds now, their potential for success in the future is greatly increased." The Dell family live in one of the largest houses in Austin, Texas and has been reported to be the 15th largest house in the world.l Dell) : Founder of Dell Computers.

Despite the last minute change of mind by the US based James Otis owner of Mahatma Gandhi’s personal objects, the items went under the hammer in New York today (Thusrday Afternoon New York time). Indian bussiness tycoon Vijay Mallya bought the memorabilia items for $1.8 million. Bidding began at $20,000 and rose to the final price within seven minutes. The second highest bid was $1.75 million submitted online from Britain. The US justice department has asked the Antiquorum Auctioneers to hold the lot for two weeks pending a resolution between the new owner, the US and Indian Government.
Tony Bedhi - a representative for Mallya did the bidding. He later informed that the items would be returned to India for public display. It is not clear though if the items would be handed over to the Indian government.
It has been reported that confusion prevailed at the Antiquorum Auctioneers. The chairman of Antiquorum Auctioneers Robert Maron announced that despite news that Otis had decided to pull out, the auction would proceed. Shortly afterwards Ravi Batra a lawyer who said he was representing Otis pro bono, entered the auction house and announced that Otis wishes to halt the sale. Within an hour, Batra was escorted out from the auction house by the staff.

Vijay Mallya owns the United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines
The owner James Otis was earlier demanding budgetary increases in India’s spending on the poor in exchange for the memorabilia. New Delhi was irritated with the demands put forward by Mr Otis. Sources said that the government feels Mr Otis cannot dictate terms. Earlier Sant Singh Chatwal an US-Indian businessman had called on the Indian community to join the bid to secure Mahatma Gandhi memorabilia.
Its interesting to note that Mallya had earlier bought the Sword of Tipu Sultan - another item of Indian heritage for Rs 4 crore and brought it back to India.
In 1867, Henri Nestlé, a pharmacist, developed a food for babies who were unable to breastfeed. His first success was a premature infant who could not tolerate his mother's milk or any of the usual substitutes. People quickly recognized the value of the new product, after Nestlé's new formula saved the child's life, and soon, Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé was being sold in much of Europe.

Henri Nestle (born Heinrich Nestle)

The origins of the Nestle Company go all the way back to 1867, when Henri Nestle created a nutritious product for infants that could be used by mothers who were unable to breast-feed. Henri Nestle made use of his family escutcheon, the "Nest", a graphic translation of his name, little nest, to personify the business. Evocative of security, maternity and affection, nature and nourishment, family and tradition, this symbol remains the central element in the Nestle corporate identity.
The first commercially sold infant formula; the first condensed milk produced in Europe; the first milk chocolate; the first soluble coffee; the first freeze-dried coffee; the first granulated instant coffee -- to name just a few.
Today, the Nestle Company has grown and expanded to include the widest range of wholesome foods for people throughout the world.
Nestle now produces the world's favorite brands in 489 factories worldwide. In 130 years of growth and diversification, we have never lost sight of our core business: improving the quality of people's lives through high-quality, nutritious, and convenient prepared foods and beverages. Today, Nestle brands are known on every continent, and some products -- like Nescafe, Carnation and Maggi -- are sold in more than 100 countries.

Nissan's all new global compact car

Nissan has been sighted many times undergoing tests in Chennai and its launch is awaited. Nissan has been heard referring to the next-gen Micra as the "all new global compact car".
This has fuelled rumours that the name Micra could be dropped in favour of a newer name. Micra is being considered an important model of Nissan and would be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show.
Micra has been built on the much acclaimed V-platform, which boasts of special features like less number of parts and extensive use of plastic parts in the powertrain making it a light vehicle.
It would be interesting to see how the company prices its product to beat the competition.
Apart from Micra, Nissan would also showcase Juke at the motor show. This car with its 1.6L turbocharged 190bhp engine and designing could be a good option for Indian market.
The other cars in the Nissan stable at the show include Nissan Leaf, updated Nissan Qashqai, refreshed Nissan Pathfinder and Navara and the Nissan 370Z Roadster.
Unconfirmed news is also there about the next-gen Renault Clio that could be made in India , sharing the same V-platform as Micra. But before all this, Nissan needs to strengthen its dealership network to support its products well.
