Profile of Sachin Tendulkar
Full Name: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar
Date of Birth: April 24, 1973
Place of Birth: Mumbai
Major Teams: India, Mumbai
Batting Style: Right -Hand Batsman
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium, Leg Break, Right Arm Off Break
ODI Debut : India v Pakistan at Gujranwala, 2nd ODI, 1989/90
Test Debut : India v Pakistan at Karachi, 1st Test, 1989/90
Height : 5'5
The first batsman to score 10,000 runs in one-day cricket, making the record in the third game of a five-match series against Australia on the 31st of March 2001. He reached the landmark when he scored 34 runs in his 266th match and 259th innings. Tendulkar, 27, in his amazing 12-year career, has scored a world record 28 hundreds and 50 half-centuries in his 10,000 runs.
A genius without a doubt, this little master made his International debut in ODI’s and Tests at the age of 16 against Pakistan against the fiery pace of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. He then went to England as a part of the national side, and has not looked back ever since. The name itself strikes terror in the hearts of bowlers all around the world. Hailed as the next master-blaster following the legacy of the great West Indian Vivian Richards, this man has every shot in the book, and can kill any attack in the world when in full swing. There is nothing this man cannot do.
In batting, he has reached a stage that others can only dream of. He has destroyed practically every bowling attack in the world. Tendulkar's 'specialties' include the straight drive (seemingly nobody plays the shot better than him), the cover drive, the square cut, the pullshot over midwicket/square leg, the delicate leg glance, the late cut, the lofted shots over mid-on and mid-off and not to mention the improvisations he keeps coming up with, time and again. He has tremendous power in his forearms and can hit the ball out of almost every ground in the World. He plays each of his shots amazingly and has even employed the reverse sweep to good effect. Some of his shots are hit with so much power that the ball simply rockets to the fence as if he was trying to dismiss the ball from his presence. On the other hand, some of his shots are neatly timed and placed well. His timing can be quite exquisite and it is this blend of timing and raw power which makes him the world's best/greatest batsman. Mentally very strong, Tendulkar is best when confronted by a challenge.
Some remarkable achievements of his career are:
* 4th highest tally of runs in test cricket (10,134) at an outstanding average of 57.25 (highest among those who have scored over 8,500 test runs) as of March 2005
* Most runs (over 13642) and centuries (38) in one-day internationals
* Only person to have scored over 11,000 ODI runs and over 25 ODI centuries as of April 28, 2005
* Highest ODI batting average among Indian batsmen and among all batsmen who have scored over 7,500 ODI runs (as of April 3, 2005)

* Only player to have over 100 innings of 50+ runs in ODIs as of April 2005
* Most Number of Runs in World Cup Cricket History
* First cricketer to cross 10,000-run mark in ODIs

* Among those who have played over 100 test matches, he is the only one with a batting average above 55.
* Only second Indian to cross 10,000 runs in Test matches.
* He has the most centuries in ODI cricket against Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
* He is the fastest to score 10,000 runs in test cricket history. He holds this record along with Brian Lara. Both of them achieved this feat in 195 innings.
* To go with this he has 34 hundreds in Test cricket at an average of 57. An average above 50 distinguishes a batsman as an all time great.
* Highest individual score in ODIs among Indian batsmen (186* against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999)

Career – Member of Parliament in India representing Amethi Constituency. General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. Also in charge of Youth Congress and National Students Union of India (NSUI).
Born on 19 June in 1970, Rahul Gandhi happens to be a popular Indian politician and Member of Parliament (MP) representing the constituency of Amethi. He is affiliated to the Indian National Congress (INC) party. Rahul Gandhi hails from the illustrious Nehru-Gandhi family in India that has given the country a slew of worthy Prime Ministers and is the son of Sonia Gandhi (President of INC) and late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991 by Sri Lankan militant outfit, LTTE.
When Rahul Gandhi was just 14 years old, his grandmother Indira Gandhi who was then the Prime Minister of the country was assassinated by her security guards. Jawaharlal Nehru, his great-grandfather was the first Prime Minister of India. Rahul Gandhi’s great-great-grandfather, Motilal Nehru was an eminent leader of the national movement for Indian independence. As far as education is concerned, the elementary and primary schooling of Rahul Gandhi happened at the Modern School in New Delhi, but he had to drop out and take up home-schooling for security reasons.
In 1989, he took admission into the much coveted St Stephen's College of Delhi on the basis of his abilities as a competitive pistol shooter, but this claim was widely disputed. He dropped out of Stephens a year later and instead headed for the United States in 1990. There he enrolled into the Harvard University to study Economics. It is said that Harvard alumni records Rahul Gandhi as attending between 1990 and 1993, but not as a degree student. Finally again, he was shifted (for security reasons) to the Rollins College in Florida to do his B.A. in 1994.
Said to be working with a financial consulting agency in the United States, Rahul Gandhi is said to have left his job in 1999 to assist his sister and mother for preparing for that year’s Lok Sabha elections in India. That Rahul Gandhi was seriously planning to foray into Indian politics spread around as a strong speculation first in 2003 and even the young man did not directly deny this. Soon thereafter, he began to accompany his mother Sonia to various meeting and events of the Indian National Congress party.
When Rahul Gandhi and his equally popular sister, Priyanka visited their father’s former constituency at Amethi that was under their mother’s charge that time, the speculation about Rahul’s entering politics reached a crescendo and the final yes came in March 2004. Rahul Gandhi eventually announced that he was standing for his father's former constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh state in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament in India. At that time, the Congress had been faring inefficiently in Uttar Pradesh and held sway over only 10 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
As such, this announcement about Rahul Gandhi generated surprise because many held that his sister Priyanka was more charismatic and therefore likelier to win. Nevertheless, Rahul’s candidacy was received happily by Amethi locals. Same time, his love life with Columbian girlfriend, Juanita was also said to be blooming. In media interview, he clarified that Veronique was his girlfriend and that she was Spanish and not Columbian. Moving back to politics again, Rahul Gandhi won the election with a tremendous majority and proved successful in securing the family stronghold at Amethi with a margin of more than 100,000.
The Congress party had surprisingly defeated the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rahul Gandhi is now the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He has also been given the reins of the Youth Congress and the National Students Union of India. Rahul Gandhi also attended the Congress Working Committee meeting that was convened at New Delhi on 8 November 2007. Recently, the young leader was in news for dining and spending the night on a modest cot at a Dalit’s hut in Uttar Pradesh state’s Sultanpur district.
However, do not be fooled by that calm and controlled façade usually worn by the young Gandhi when in formal public meetings. Not everyone knows that the gentleman also happens to be an avid sports lover. Rahul Gandhi is known to have undergone shooting training in the Aravalli range near Delhi and also nurtures a deep love for power biking, and paragliding.

Jawaharlal Nehru (जवाहरलाल नेहरू, JavÄharlÄl NehrÅ«) (November 14, 1889 – May 27, 1964), also called Pandit ('Teacher') Nehru, was the leader of the socialist wing of the Indian National Congress during and after India's struggle for independence from the British Empire. He became the first Prime Minister of India at independence on August 15, 1947, holding the office until his death. A committed socialist, Nehru was the architect of the 'Avadi Resolution' that swore by the 'Socialistic Pattern of Society.'
Brief Biography
1889-1918
The son of prominent Congress leader Motilal Nehru, Nehru returned from education in England at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge to practice law before following his father into politics. By his parents' arrangement, Nehru married Kamala Kaul, then seventeen in 1916. At the time of his wedding on 8 February 1916, Jawaharlal was twenty-six, a British educated barrister. Kamala came from a well-known business family of Kashmiris in Delhi. Jawaharlal was domineering; Kamala quiet and unobtrusive. Despite Jawaharlal's presumably modern views, Kamala was to have very little impact on her petulant husband. In the second year of the marriage, Kamala gave birth to their only child, Indira Priyadarshini in 1917.
1918-1937
Politically, Nehru gradually emerged as a protegé of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and entered the first rank of Indian nationalist politics as president of Congress (an annual post) for the first time in 1929. Nehru spent most of these years in prison writing books and letters; he lost his father and wife while incarcerated. Kamala Nehru died of tuberculosis on 28 February 1936 in Switzerland.
1937-1947
Imprisoned for 32 months after the Quit India movement of 1942, Nehru formed the country's first Indian government in July 1946 in the face of mounting opposition from the All-India Muslim League, whose campaign for a separate state led to the creation of a separate Pakistan in 1947.
Nehru's major rival as Mahatma Gandhi's successor in Congress was Sardar Vallabhai Patel. Nehru was considered more idealistic than the more pragmatic Patel, who was also popular within Congress; but Gandhi's fondness for Nehru proved decisive in all contests between the two leaders.
Another of Nehru's political rivals, this time on the Congress left, was Subhas Chandra Bose who championed a military solution against the British. Bose left the Congress after Gandhi opposed his Presidency at the Tripura Session of Congress in 1937; he went on to found the Indian National Army, which has been referred to as the "Forgotten Army" in a famous book of the same title, and, allied with the Japanese, took part in action against colonial British forces in much of Southeast Asia.
1947-1964
Nehru served as the prime minister of India for these 18 years consecutively. Nehru died on 27 May 1964. India's heavy defeat in the war with China, which dimmed his public stature greatly, and affected him greatly both physically and mentally: he felt betrayed by the Chinese, whom he had trusted implicitly and supported in many fora. He died shortly thereafter, having achieved much, yet still - according to a quote from Robert Frost which he had always kept on his office desk - feeling he had so much more left to do. He was laid to rest at the Shantivan.
Nehru's policies
Economic policy
Nehru was fascinated by the Soviet Union's Piatiletka or 5-year plans. But he wrote after a visit there in the 1920s that 'the human costs are unpayable'. A believer in the 'mixed economy' of Harold Laski and influenced by the Fabian Society, Nehru wished the economy of India to be partially capitalist, but with the state occupying a large role, especially in the commanding heights of the economy.
In setting a path for the economic policy after Independence, he chose from a set of options considerably more limited than those available today, and followed to a large degree the conventional wisdom among Indian academic economists of the time. India's growth rate in GDP stayed moderately above 4% during all the years that Nehru was Prime Minister. It is hard to say definitively how much growth there might have been with different economic policies: predominantly capitalist Western Europe grew slightly faster than India during the Nehru years (especially during the decade after World War II); but so did the command economies of communist China and the Soviet Union. The strongly capitalist USA grew somewhat more slowly, as did most of the newly independent nations that followed WWII (with the exception of oil-producing nations).
Some recent (but isolated) studies influenced by Chicago School economists—such as one by Goldman Sachs—have claimed that India, had the potential to grow faster than it did in the post-Nehru 1960-1980 timeframe. According to this thinking, that opportunity was wasted out of a misplaced faith in the power of economic planning. Economist Jagdish Bhagwati has remarked that India's problem has been that it has too many brilliant economists; Bhagwati believes the stalwarts of Nehru's Planning Commissions began to believe in their own infallibility, to the detriment of the Indian nation. B. R. Shenoy a contemporary opponent of Nehru's Second Five-Year Plan, notably, is now considered a significant theorist in the Austrian School of Economics.
The Soviet Union was the only major power during Nehru's tenure to aid India in developing independent capabilities areas of heavy industry, engineering, and technology. This political fact, combined with Nehru's preference for state-led development, promoted suspicion about the sincerity of India's non-aligned foreign policy positions. In hindsight, the Nehruvian model failed in many of its objectives; however, many Indian economists—particularly among Nehru's contemporaries—believe Nehru's emphasis on central planning was the right policy for India of that time.
Some critics of Indian economic development believe that the economy of the Nehruvian and post-Nehruvian era, with inefficient public sector entities on the one hand, and crony-capitalist private sector entities that used the so-called license raj to carve out lucrative niches for themselves on the other, was a product of economic policy foundations laid during Nehru's tenure.
Nehru's economic policies are sometimes confused by critics with those of his daughter, Indira Gandhi, which were more statist and dirigiste in orientation. Nehru's economics of state intervention and investment were conceived at a time when transfers of capital and technology important to India were not easily forthcoming from the developed world (which at the time also had plenty of state-sponsored capital controls.)
Institutional legacy
The British left behind civic institutions including the judicial system, parliament and universities that continued to function well during Nehru's tenure.
Foreign policy
Nehru's personal charisma extended to the world stage where, because of his leadership, India was often seen to be "punching above its weight." As prime minister, he pursued a foreign policy of non-alignment and became a founder and leader of the Non-Aligned Movement. He pursued India's claim to Kashmir in the face of Pakistani opposition, resulting in the First Kashmir War (1947-49). Not wishing to confront China, Nehru did not protest the Chinese conquest of Tibet, despite the fact that it meant the disappearance of a buffer state that had separated China and India, although the Dalai Lama was permitted to set up a government-in-exile at Dharamsala. Military defeat at the hands of the People's Republic of China in the Sino-Indian War in October 1962 brought strong criticism of military unpreparedness and Nehru's policy of excessive trust in China, which had, to its credit, truthfully indicated its intention to occupy both Tibet and parts of northern India.
During the Cold War on November 27, 1946, Nehru appealed to the United States and the Soviet Union to end nuclear testing and to start nuclear disarmament, stating that such an action would "save humanity from the ultimate disaster."
Home affairs
Though Nehru professed distaste for armed force, during his administration the Home Minister Sardar Patel used India's army to secure, for instance, Hyderabad in September 1948; later Portuguese-colonized Goa in December 1961 was incorporated into India through a bloodless military takeover.

Largest, costliest cruiser nearly ready for launch
Helsinki, Nov 4 (DPA) A thin layer of ice covers the teak wood deck of the cruise ship the Oasis of the Seas at the moment. But the cold weather is just one of the challenges a visitor will need to overcome if they want to visit the vessel: tins of paint are everywhere and sheets of tarpaulin make walking around the ship difficult.
By the start of November the flagship of the cruise company Royal Caribbean International (RCI) should be ready to set sail. When that day arrives the world will have a few more superlatives: never before has there been a cruise ship as large and as expensive to build as the Oasis. Right now construction and fitting out of the $1.4 billion vessel is underway at the Aker shipyard in Turku, Finland.
Over 2,000 people are working on the 360-metre-long and 71-metre-wide ship. All of them are wearing blue overalls and helmets - a few are even jogging around. “It’s as busy here as a freeway in Miami,” says RCI spokeswoman Elisabetta Raffo. “But we are well on schedule.”
The Oasis is due to be christened in Fort Lauderdale Nov 30. On Dec 1 it will begin its maiden voyage to the Caribbean. Some of the islands in the Caribbean are quite small - too small almost when you know the ship can take up to 6,296 passengers and 2,160 crew.
That explains why the Oasis will only make three visits during its seven day cruise to St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Nassau in the Bahamas. The four day voyage will go to the Royal Caribbean port resort of Labadee on Haiti.
“They are building new passenger terminals in the harbours so we won’t have to go through customs on board the ships in future,” says hotel director Raimund Gschaider.
Luckily there is no pressing need to go on land as the Oasis of the Seas has plenty on offer and a week on board may end up passing by too quickly. Although not every guest will want to try out one of the ship’s two climbing walls, hang from a zip-line over the boardwalk or go ice skating, many will certainly be taking advantage of the pool and bar areas.
The biggest freshwater swimming pool at sea - called the Aqua Theatre - will also tempt a few to go diving for the first time. Passengers can even go for a walk in the ship’s Central Park; a park area the size of two football pitches with trees up to eight metres tall.
The Oasis looks smaller than it actually is and the architects managed to make the vessel look elegant despite its 18 decks. The ship’s interior is also almost transparent thanks to the wide-scale use of glass. The main restaurant can seat up to 2,000 guests but due to the clever design with corners, dividing walls and alcoves you only get to see a portion of it at any one time
