Cadbury was the son of John Cadbury ( 1801 – 89 ), who had founded a cocoa and chocolate manufacturing business in Birmingham. George joined the family concern in 1856 and five years later assumed control in partnership with his elder brother, Richard . A committed Quaker throughout his life, George Cadbury began teaching at adult education classes in Birmingham in 1859 and continued to do so into his seventies. This experience enabled him to understand the grim conditions then prevailing for factory workers. In 1879 Cadbury Brothers moved to a new factory on a rural site outside Birmingham, where George introduced sweeping measures to improve the welfare and education of the workforce. In the 1890s he purchased land surrounding the factory and commissioned architect W. Alexander Harvey to build a company housing estate with large gardens and generous amenities. The Bournville Village Trust was founded in 1900 and now administers various housing developments, not exclusively company housing.

Following his brother's death in 1899 , George Cadbury became head of the company. As a Liberal in politics, he acquired in 1901 the Daily News (later the News Chronicle) to provide a platform for his ideas. In 1903 he donated his former home, Woodbrooke, Birmingham, to the Society of Friends as a residential centre.
