A first generation entrepreneur Brij Mohan Munjal started his business career making bicycle parts. Today his $2 billion (sales) Hero Group is world's biggest bicycle and Motor cycle producer; His company Hero Honda is Honda's Indian partner for motorcycles.

In the year 2005 Hero Honda sold over an incredible 29-lakh motorcycle. This was a phenomenal jump over the 13, 00,899 motorcycles they sold in 2001 when they first took the title of being the largest selling two-wheeler in the world. Talking of their strategy in maintaining this position Munjal says that product innovation, new product development, distribution, and after-sale service coupled with excellent customer relationship management are some of the initiatives have helped them retain their World No 1 position for the over five years.

When Munjal started manufacturing motor cycles in the early 1990's there was hardly any body who took him seriously. At that time scooters were in demand and motorcycles were considered a young man's show off machine. Munjal how ever was undeterred the condition of India 's roads and the changing demographic profile skewed things in his favor. The motorcycle market really took off and compelled the two wheeler leader Bajaj Auto to change its startegy. From being a predominantly scooter manufacturer Bajaj diversified into motor cycles. Even today Hero Honda controls almost half of India 's two wheeler market. With rising crude prices the Indian consumer's interest in motor cycles is expected to continue at the same pace at least for the net decade.
